I get ugly output from this command:

$ dust
Image

The black bars seem like a bug.

This Dust 1.2.0 in Bash on Debian Trixie.

Note: As I just reported #534, I think I won't assess dust further -- what's shipped with Debian Trixie doesn't seem mature enough yet.

No those black bars are literally the whole point of dust.

In the above example 4K is 33% of the 12K directory, giving black bars a third of the way across the line.

If this is not intuitive to you I don't think this program is for you.
